Wisconsin Humane Society celebrates
100,000th adoption milestone
MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Humane Society is thrilled to announce that today will mark the 100,000th adoption since the shelter opened the doors to its Milwaukee facility in December 1999.
“Every one of those 100,000 adoptions brought love to the lives of a homeless animal and the people who took that animal into their family. It’s amazing to think of the happiness that our work has made possible," said Anne Reed, executive director.
The Wisconsin Humane Society finds homes for 9,000 to 10,000 animals every year. Adoptable animals stay in adoption until they find homes and no animals are ever euthanized for space or time, a policy which was made possible when the shelter moved from its old Humboldt Ave. & Capitol Drive location to the state-of-the-art facility on Wisconsin Avenue in 1999.
Same-day adoptions, waived fees for adult cats, the utilization of the ASPCA “Matchmaker” Program for dogs, and other innovative programs have made the adoption program a model for other shelters across the country.
The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is one of the oldest and most respected shelters in the entire country. It was founded in 1879 and has served millions of animals from the Milwaukee area over the years.
