Keep Sparky
Safe This Holiday Season
Follow these
tips from the Wisconsin Humane Society
Be cautious
about sharing the holiday feast with your dog or
cat. Chocolate; poultry bones and skin; fatty, greasy
foods; grapes; onions; and bread dough can all cause
serious health problems for your companion animal.
Keep all
of those extra electrical cords from being a tempting
toy. Don't allow cords to dangle or run loosely
across the floor. Keep all of them safely taped
down and unplug them when you are away from home.
Tinsel,
string, ribbon and yarn will all be seen as wonderful
play things, especially to your cat. Keep these
things out of kitty's reach. They can cause serious
internal damage if swallowed.
Candles
are certainly a beautiful part of many holiday traditions,
but be very careful with their placement. The pretty
flame can be an enticement or they could simply
be knocked over by a wagging tail. To keep your
companion animal safe, never leave a candle burning
while you are away or sleeping.
It is
great to share the holidays with Sparky by giving
him a gift. However, all gifts should first be closely
inspected. Make sure they do not contain small pieces
that can be easily broken off and swallowed. Look
for things like plastic eyes or noses, or loose
strings.
Be aware
that some popular holiday plants can be toxic if
ingested. These include, but are not limited to,
holly, mistletoe, azalea, amaryllis and Christmas
rose. The jury is still out on poinsettias, but
it is advised to keep them out of reach just in
case.
