Protect Peaches from Potential Poisons

MILWAUKEE – After flossing your teeth each day with dental floss, you discard it away and don't give it another thought until the next day. But this item and many other commonly used household products can pose a threat to companion animals.

The Wisconsin Humane Society reminds humans to avoid the following household dangers:

·   In addition to dental floss, string, yarn and rubber bands can be easy for dogs and cats to swallow and cause intestinal blockages or strangulation.

·   Toys with removable parts such as stuffed animals with plastic eyes can be dangerous and serve as a choking hazard for animals.

·   Human medications including both over-the-counter and prescribed should be out of your furry friend's reach.

·   Numerous foods such as chicken and turkey bones, onions, yeast dough, grapes, coffee grounds and beans as well as chocolate can be choking hazards or poisonous. Bones can puncture an intestine and cause death and/or significant veterinary bills.

·   Chemicals including insect control products, lawn fertilizer and antifreeze are fatal to companion animals. Walking on the lawn may be enough to cause serious illness.

·   If swallowed, plants such as geraniums, lilies and poinsettias can be poisonous.

·   The Wisconsin Humane Society recommends that small animal friends stay clear from wood shavings because they emit dangerous fumes for the little guys.
