Wildlife Volunteer Positions
With more than 5,000
orphaned, sick and injured wild animals arriving
at the Center annually, volunteers are in high demand!
Peak season in the Wildlife Center is during the
summer and early fall, though WHS provides care
wild animals year round. Please consider one of
the following positions:
Join Our WIngs Patrol
Bird Collision Monitors are volunteers who patrol
areas of downtown Milwaukee in the early morning
hours during periods of peak migration to rescue
injured songbirds. Injured birds are transported
to the Wisconsin Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation
Center for care. Data collected from monitoring
helps us understand the window collision problem
in Milwaukee.
This is a special volunteering opportunity so click
here to join our team of Bird Collision Monitors
as they walk the streets of downtown Milwaukee rescuing
fallen songbirds. You must be an adult to participate
and are encouraged to volunteer with another adult.
Orphan Bird Care
What a truly special
experience! From May through September, volunteers
are needed to help feed orphaned wild birds in our
Nursery. Other responsibilities include preparing
food and cleaning cages. The minimum age requirement
for this program is 13 years old. No previous animal
handling experience is necessary. The time commitment
is one day per week, for three hours. Four different
shifts are available between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.,
seven days a week. This is the perfect activity
to do with a friend or family member.
Wildlife Telephone and
Admissions Counseling
Assist wildlife staff in answering calls from the
public on a variety of subjects relating to wildlife.
Most calls involve helping someone deal with an
injured animal, or how to deal with a nuisance animal
situation. Volunteers dispatch requests for wild
animal rescues and injured animal pick-ups to rescue
volunteers and staff. Some experience handling phone
inquires is helpful, but not necessary. Training
and reference materials are provided. The time commitment
is one day per week, for three hours. Shifts are
available between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. year round.
This is a great way for you to help us educate the
public and it is an excellent opportunity for those
who prefer not to have hands on animal care.
